A Rose, symbolic of truth but also forgiveness, is what Heike wanted to create after being commissioned to sculpt for the naming of the Thuli Madonsela Rose during the Ludwig’s Rose festival in October 2019.
The petals are separate from each other and individually suspended from the ceiling, but together, form the massive Rose shape. The sculpture is colourless and during the festival, a rainbow of colours was projected onto the rose.
These prodigious petals create a space for absorption, thoughts, truth, and reflection and encourage you to immerse yourself in the soft comfort, change, forgiveness and emotions arising amidst the light, larger than life, rose petals. The 1000’s of guests that visited the rose farm during the rose festival, did exactly that.
THE PROCESS
Sculpting the rose was done individually petal by petal on ground level and only came together once it was suspended for the installation. Lying on the ground was a necessity to give the correct viewing point in combining the petals to make up the rose bloom.
Being amidst roses since childhood has given Heike the feeling and understanding of the rose’s anatomy. Her love and exploration of various materials has given her the means to express herself through the rose.
