My time during this Parisian residency influenced

My time during this Parisian residency influenced my practice by bringing a sense of poetic nostalgia and architectural sophistication into my suspended artworks.

At the core of my sculptures lies the interplay between
materialism and meaning. The metal I use is inherently hard and enduring, representing resilience and permanence. Yet, in contrast, the rose—a recurring symbol in my work— embodies softness, delicacy and the ephemeral beauty of nature.

This sculpture reflects the artistic traditions of Paris, where roses often appear as motifs in art, architecture and decorative elements.

The intricate rose designs on the façades of cathedrals, such as Notre-Dame and Sacre Coeur and their depictions in Impressionist paintings, notably those of Claude Monet, capture the profound connection between nature and human artistry.

From intricate carvings on buildings to their presence in
classical paintings, the rose stands as a timeless emblem of beauty, strength and fragility.

Couture Creature – A Sculptural Installation

Today, an informal placement of Couture Creature took place in public space, sparking awareness & conversation about fashion’s role in shaping identity, the labour & materials behind luxury, & the fine line between self-expression & societal expectation. Artists were present to witness, document & share the moment.

Artist Statement
Couture Creature is a sculptural installation crafted from salvaged fabrics & leathers from couture, retail & costume design. It transforms discarded remnants into a living entity—caught between adornment & burden, beauty & constraint.

Clothed in grey felt & soft pink leather, it culminates in an oversized rosebud, symbolizing natural beauty. Rectangular, punched leather—reminiscent of window frames showcasing luxury fashion—forms a heavy train, evoking both grandeur & the exhaustion of excess. A single hanger grips the garment, inscribed with:

“shape me
bend me
MAKE ME”

As cardboard hangers slip from the dress, they suggest transience & detachment. Inspired by my artist residency in Paris, this piece reflects on fashion’s artistry & craftsmanship versus the mass production of trends.

Couture Creature is both a tribute & a critique—an adorned yet encumbered entity, assembled yet unraveling, questioning its own existence.

**Magic.** ✨ Late nights in the studio, but she’s complete — the golden rose, larger than life, amongst my artworks that are chaotically scattered throughout the studio apartment. (And yes it’s a big rose again - can’t help it🤷🏼‍♀️)

Paris has me reflecting on more than just mirror images. It’s bustling, yet somehow calm. Maybe it’s the river outside my apartment or the space this residency has allowed me to create. A space to wake up and fall straight into my art without judgement and familiar responsibilities.
Grateful beyond words for everyone managing home in SA.

So much to share—this journey will keep me busy long after my residency. And yes, I’ll be bringing artwork home to exhibit in 🇿🇦

But this one… might just be staying in Europe. 🤞🏼🕉️
