This artwork was created in July 2021 after being commissioned to create a sculpture that would represent the rose, specifically the Sabine Plattner Rose, within her indigenous coastal garden at Yzerfontein. In 2004, the salmon ‘Spire’ rose, with beautiful and prolifically flowering rosebuds, was named after Sabine Plattner, co-founder of www.spacafrica.org.
The rose sculpture centre is made form a solid piece of steel and folded and moulded into shape. The petals are like waves shaping the rose. Stainless steel mesh was chosen for it’s longevity, especially at the coast and also for it’s soft, malleable nature, despite it being a strong metal.
